Not exactly how I wanted to spend my vacation . . .

but fitting, given the time of year.

On Thursday we put to sleep our eldest cat, Sassafras. She was 16 and a half, and suffering from kidney failure. It was the best thing we could do for her, bless her sweet heart, but it’s hard, it will always be hard, it will never not suck. She was family, she was amazing, and this death, while not unexpected, has hit us hard. If you’ve got furry loved ones to snuggle, please do so extra hard for us.

It’s never easy to lose a pet, but when I think of all the stray animals in the world I can’t help but smile at the idea that your Sassafrass was lucky to have known love and warmth from you for all those years.

Of our household, Sassy was the only cat that wasn’t a rescue or the direct offspring of rescues. She was planned and purchased. ๐Ÿ™‚ She had a great life, was well loved, and — can’t stress enough — died at home in as much comfort as could be afforded to her, in a soft bed, surrounded by compassion and adoration and love, with a very easy transition. Compared to how my Angel went four years ago, it was worlds better, and I take comfort in that. (but it still sucks!)

As a writer, you can bet that Sassy will be making a cameo appearance in one work of mine or another!

Thank you for your kind words.

Aw, thank you! ๐Ÿ™‚ I plan on phoning you today, once it’s a decent hour. So, no turning the phone off now that you know!

We’re doing better(ish?). It’s hard, and harder when one of the others starts looking for her, but we’re getting there.
